I'm a road-trip enthusiast based in the Netherlands, and I drive more than 30,000 km a year across Europe. What keeps me on the road is the places themselves: the capitals and the small towns, the way people live, eat and get around in each of them, and the small local rules that only make sense once you have driven there.

This site is where I share what the road has taught me, and my affection for the cities along the way. The practical side is here: what to buy, register and check before each border. The cities themselves, and where to leave the car in them, are on our sister site, ParkingInEurope.

How the rules here are checked

Every rule on this site is read from the page of the ministry, city or operator that sets it, and each page shows the date it was checked and lists its sources at the bottom. When an official source says nothing, the page says so rather than filling the gap with a guess. When two official sources disagree, both are given.

The opinions are mine, and they read like opinions: "I'd buy it at a petrol station", "I would still carry the chains". The facts are theirs, and they are linked.

What this site doesn't do

It doesn't sell vignettes, stickers, registrations or anything else, and it never links to the resellers that charge several times the official price for them. A few links to other companies are partner links: each one is labelled "Partner link", and the site earns a commission if you book through it.

The route checklist on the home page keeps your ticks and dates in your own browser. Nothing you enter there is sent to this site.
