Low-emission zones
Do I need a sticker for Europe's low-emission zones?
Verdict
It depends on the country, and there are only three answers.
Buy a sticker before you go: Germany, France. Register the number plate: Spain, Belgium, Poland. Nothing to buy or register: Italy, Netherlands.
Every country here runs its zones differently, and the difference that matters to a foreign car is what you have to do before the boundary. Some want a sticker in the windscreen, which only comes by post. Some want your number plate on a register. Some want nothing at all and simply read the plate at the camera. Each country page lists its zones with the hours, what is kept out, the fine and the city's own page.
The mistake I see most is treating these like motorway tolls. A vignette can be bought at the border. A French sticker cannot, and a Kraków registration takes up to 14 days.
