Do I need to register my car for Belgium's low-emission zones?

Belgium has three low-emission zones — Brussels, Antwerp and Ghent — and all three work off cameras reading number plates. A Belgian car gets checked against the national register automatically. A foreign car does not, so you have to hand the plate over yourself. Drive into Brussels in a spotless Euro 6 petrol car without doing that and the fine is €150 anyway. Antwerp says 44% of French cars entering its zone get a penalty, and the city blames forgotten registrations, not dirty engines.

Belgium: registering a foreign plate

Two registrations, both free, both online, neither producing anything you stick on the glass.

Brussels goes through lez.brussels. Have the registration certificate in front of you: plate, country, date of first registration, date on the current certificate. It takes a few minutes and lasts five years. You are allowed to do it up to five days after you first drive in, but I do it the evening I book the hotel, because the deadline is the thing people forget.

Flanders is one registration for both Antwerp and Ghent, through stad.gent or antwerpen.be. The deadline is the day after you enter. Ghent warns approval can take up to fourteen days, so early matters more here than in Brussels. Dutch plates skip this step entirely — the Netherlands shares its vehicle data with the Flemish cities.

If the car is too old to qualify, each city sells day passes instead. Brussels: €35 a day for a car, up to 24 a year. Antwerp and Ghent: €45 a day, up to 12 a year. In all three you buy before you drive, or at the latest the day after, and in Brussels you must register the vehicle before you can buy one.

Belgium issues no LEZ sticker and no vignette. Only lez.brussels, stad.gent and antwerpen.be are official, all three are free, and anything charging you a "Belgian environmental badge" fee is selling air.

Brussels, Antwerp and Ghent: where the zones run

Three low-emission zones, plus the camera-controlled car-free centres that catch more visitors than the emission rules do. Bruges, Leuven, Mechelen and every city in Wallonia have no LEZ at all: Wallonia's region-wide ban on old vehicles was repealed on 26 April 2024, and while Walloon towns may still create their own zone, none has.

Belgium: what the fines cost

Brussels: €350 for a non-compliant car with no day pass, €150 for a foreign car that never registered, even a clean one. One fine per plate every three months, four a year maximum. Antwerp: €150, rising to €250 for a second offence within twelve months and €350 after that. Ghent: €185, once per day however many times you cross the ring.

Antwerp and Ghent both have a softer landing. If your car actually met the standard and you only forgot to register, you can pay a €75 late-registration charge within thirty days instead of the fine.

The notice reaches you. Ghent and Antwerp hand foreign plates to collection agencies in your own country, letter in your own language, with collection costs added after thirty days. Hire cars are worse: the rental company gets the notice, pays or passes it on, and adds an administration fee of its own. Check the plate is registered before you leave the rental desk.

Belgium: electric, hybrid and older cars

Battery electric and hydrogen cars are admitted everywhere, and still have to be registered — the camera cannot tell what is under the bonnet. Plug-in hybrids are judged on the Euro standard on the registration document, like any other car.

The cut-offs: Brussels needs diesel Euro 6 or petrol Euro 3 since January 2026, with diesel due out in 2030 and petrol in 2035. Antwerp and Ghent still accept diesel Euro 5 and petrol Euro 2 — the tightening planned for January 2026 was cancelled on 28 November 2025, and Ghent's review of the whole zone slipped to spring 2027. A hire car picked up in Belgium will clear all three zones. An older private diesel might clear Flanders and fail Brussels on the same trip.
